Implementation of the Special Educational Needs Policy 2017

Actions taken as part of the school development plan, specific to SEN provision:

  • To monitor the progress of specific children in KS1 and KS2 in order to evaluate the impact of SEN funding and the impact that it has had on individual children’s progress.
  • To monitor the progress of specific children in collaboration with outside agencies in order to determine the next steps in in relation to these children’s support.
  • To ensure that children new to the Reception class who have SEN have clearly targeted support and that staff receive appropriate training to ensure their needs are met.
  • To ensure the smooth transition from primary in to secondary school of Year 6 children who have SEN and particularly those with Statements.

Impact of actions taken:

  • SEN pupils made at least expected progress with the majority exceeding their school targets
  • An increase in the number of parents attending SEN review meetings
  • Pupils continue to make contributions to their SEN review meetings and where appropriate those with One Plans increase their contribution from the previous year.
  • Opportunities for children with SEN to engage in extra curricula and enrichment activities increased.
  • The gap between attainment/progress of most vulnerable pupils/identified pupils and their peers has reduced
  • School questionnaires and verbal feedback provide examples of positive feedback from SEN pupils and their parents
  • Improved staff awareness/understanding of the needs of children with Hearing/Site Impairments
  • Improved staff awareness/understanding of those children with autism
  • All children on the SEN register have provision maps that fit with the new Hartlepool bandings

Priorities for 2017/18 in respect of provision for SEN/D pupils:

  • To implement the new SEN policy and ensure the school is adhering to all new practices
  • Develop further, through specific CPD knowledge/skills of TAs in order for them to support more effectively children who require intervention to reach year expectations
  • To develop the “one plan” for high needs children that reflects the plan being implemented in Hartlepool for high needs children
  • To work with the EP services on maximizing the allocation of support that the school has to benefit the minority of children who need provision that can’t be met by the school’s normal routines and resources
  • To continue to widen the range of the intervention programs used to meet the needs of children with SEN.
  • To monitor the progress of specific children with a view to seeking additional support or Requesting Statutory Assessment.
  • To ensure the smooth transition from primary in to secondary school of Year 6 children who have SEN and particularly those with a One Plan.
  • Increase the knowledge/expertise of all staff in maximizing progress for those children with specific language barriers
  • Support the development of the new Assistant Inclusion Manager and her attaining the SEN qualification
  • Support the development of the new Assistant Inclusion Manger who has specific responsibility for children with emotional health difficulties. Support her attaining the SEN qualification
  • To continue to look for additional opportunities for children with SEN to engage in extra curricula and enrichment activities.
